After 10 years of construction, from 2015 to 2025, Phu Quoc International Passenger Port is expected to officially come into operation from February 14, 02, i.e. January 2025, At Ty year. This is a key project, of great significance in promoting the economic development, tourism and international trade of Phu Quoc pearl island. With a strategic location, the port is designed to modern international standards, capable of receiving large cruise ships and serving thousands of passengers every day. The technical infrastructure system at the port includes a passenger terminal, an anchorage area, a security control area, and many other amenities to ensure a convenient and safe experience for visitors. In particular, the port is expected to contribute to expanding the marine tourism network, attracting tourists from all over the world to Phu Quoc, thereby creating many job opportunities and promoting strong local economic development. In addition, the port is also integrated with high-end services such as duty-free shopping areas, luxury restaurants, and entertainment areas, giving passengers a complete experience when coming to the island. With a long-term vision, this project promises to become an ideal destination not only for tourists but also for domestic and foreign investors. In addition, the management system at the port is applied with modern technology to ensure optimal operating efficiency, minimize waiting time and improve service quality. The Phu Quoc International Passenger Port construction project was officially approved under Decision No. 555/QD-UBND dated March 20, 3 of the Chairman of the People's Committee of Kien Giang Province, with a total investment of up to 2015 billion VND. The project is deployed on an area of 1.644,728 hectares, located in Duong Dong town - the bustling center of Phu Quoc pearl island.
The port includes many important items, notably the main bridge 240 m long, 35 m wide, allowing two ships to dock at the same time on both sides. In addition, the 850 m long breakwater helps protect ships when docking safely, the 1.004 m long approach bridge integrates convenient steps for passengers. The port terminal is planned on a land area of 4,78 ha, of which the terminal construction area is up to 1.950 m², ensuring to meet the needs of serving international passengers.
However, during the implementation process, the project encountered many difficulties in legal procedures, leading to delays and many adjustments to the completion plan. Up to now, some important items such as the station and auxiliary works are still in the process of completion. According to the leaders of Kien Giang province, the steps of implementing the architectural design of the station and the construction of auxiliary items will be accelerated in early 2025, ensuring that the system operates temporarily in accordance with regulations before being officially put into operation.
In order to prepare for the port operation as planned, the People's Committee of Kien Giang province has assigned Phu Quoc city to make a specific plan, assign tasks to each specialized department, and closely coordinate with maritime safety units to ensure the ship reception process is safe and effective.
With an impressive design capacity, the port can accommodate ships with a tonnage of up to 15.000 tons and international passenger ships with a capacity of 5.000 - 6.000 people. This is the first multi-functional international passenger port in Vietnam that meets international standards, promising to bring high-class experiences to tourists. According to Phu Quoc City Party Secretary Le Quoc Anh, the port's operation is an important milestone, opening a new door for the strong development of Phu Quoc tourism, creating a driving force for synchronous traffic connections between the seaport and the international airport, thereby raising the position of Phu Quoc on the global tourism map.
In fact, in recent years, Phu Quoc Island has continuously welcomed international super yachts for sightseeing and vacation. However, due to the lack of a qualified passenger port, large yachts have to anchor offshore and transfer tourists by small boats to the island, causing inconvenience and wasting time. With the port being inaugurated and put into operation, these limitations will be completely overcome. It is expected that luxury cruise ships such as AIDAstella will dock on February 14, and Costa Serena will visit on February 2, 16 and 17, marking a promising start for Phu Quoc sea tourism.
Along with a strong image promotion strategy in the international market, the foreign media continuously highly appreciates the potential of Phu Quoc, contributing to attracting a large number of international tourists.
